Immersive Python Workshop (January 2025)

Workshop materials

This in-person two-day workshop organized by the UT Libraries and UT-OSPO is aimed at UT students, faculty, and researchers. You don't need to have any previous knowledge of Python to participate in this workshop. This example-driven two-day workshop will start with an introduction to Python and then participants will choose a particular track to learn more about more specific applications of Python. 

  • Day 1:
    • Intro to Python basics (1pm - 2pm)
    • Python and APIs for retrieving data (2pm - 3pm)
    • Managing and processing files (3pm - 4pm)
    • Optional software check to prepare for day 2 (4pm - 4:30pm)
  • Day 2:
    • Split tracks (1pm - 3pm)
      • Sentiment analysis  | Geospatial analysis | Data visualization
    • Sharing code in GitHub (3pm - 4pm)

Short tutorials alternate with hands-on  practical exercises. Participants are encouraged both to help one another, and to try applying what they learn to their own research problems during and between sessions.

Workshop sessions will run from 1:00pm-4:00pm CT on January 9th and 10th in the Scholars Lab in PCL. There will be breaks during sessions and helpers will be on hand to assist.

The registration form for the January 2025 Immersive Python Workshop will open up at 12:00pm on Wednesday December 4th. Space in this workshop is limited so please register early if you are interested in attending (registration for previous workshops filled in around an hour).

Helpers will be responsible for assisting workshop attendees install Python, GitHub Desktop, and VSCode on their laptops, help attendees work through challenges, and answer general Python questions.
