Dr. Claus Wilke, computational Biologist with Integrative Biology, shared his experience working with open source software projects. Dr. Wilke argued that contributing to a major open source project offers the best way to gain open source software development experience. Using examples from his path contributing to and eventually becoming a core contributor to the ggplot2 project, he outlined simple steps and best practices to follow for anybody who is new to the world of open source software development and would like to make a contribution.
