Katy Brown from the Oden Institute and Kimberly Ray from the Brainlife project joined OSPO Director, Angela Newell, at the Sustaining Open Source Software in the Research Enterprise Workshop hosted by Ithaka S+R and the Apereo Foundation. The event was funded by grants from the National Science Foundation with complementary funding provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.Forty participants from research, nonprofit, industry, and higher education gathered to address the persistent challenges of sustaining open source software (OSS) used in research. The event kicked off with a plenary featuring leaders who outlined common sustainability issues, such as governance, funding, metrics, and cultural barriers, before participants split into breakout sessions to identify research-specific challenges and brainstorm solutions. Throughout the event, participants addressed key themes including the need for stronger communication across OSS communities and institutions, improved discoverability of software and its use, integration of OSS into academic incentive structures, and clearer processes for decision-making and validation of reusable software. Participants highlighted the importance of aligning universities’ value propositions with OSS, exploring extra-institutional support, and treating OSS like traditional scholarly outputs. The workshop emphasized the diversity of OSS communities while uncovering shared struggles and potential strategies, laying groundwork for a forthcoming report that will expand on the proposed solutions.
